When the web breaks down, we experience supply chain issues. With these mutually beneficial relationships in place, we can innovate workarounds and create new efficiencies.<\/p>\n<h2>Supply Chain Management: Risk Mitigation<\/h2>\n<p>Risk mitigation is critical to supply chain management. To the same degree that suppliers can enable our success, they can also disable it.<\/p>\n<p>Risk assessment and planning enable agility. We mitigate supply chain risk by exercising best practices in supplier selection, establishing redundancy, and innovating alternatives. Nobody wants to be treated like a commodity or a number. Our suppliers are human beings made in the image of God with unique needs, fears, and aspirations. Every exchange, review, and collaboration in business, regardless of which direction money flows, represents an opportunity to obey Jesus\u2019s command to \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt.+22%3A39&amp;version=ESV\">love [our] neighbor<\/a><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some Christian business leaders, touchpoints with suppliers will actually exceed those with customers. These relationships should be marked by a level of care that exceeds their experience with other customers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"testimonial-content\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Our fair payment should be the least memorable thing about how we treat people in our supply chain.<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=gal.+5%3A22-23&amp;version=ESV\">fruits of the Spirit<\/a><\/span> should distinguish Christians and Christian-led businesses, as we cultivate relationships beyond fair and timely payment.<\/p>\n          <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg-content-wrap \">\n  <div class=\"outer-container\">\n    <div class=\"wysiwyg-content-area\">\n              <h2>Supply Chain Management: 7 Smart Supply Strategies<\/h2>\n<p>We can mitigate supply chain risks <i>before<\/i> breakdowns occur by exercising these seven supply chain stabilization strategies.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Establish redundancy \u2013 <\/b>According to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/skylinepolicy.com\/news-and-notes\/f\/supply-chain-interview-with-markets-policy\">Loren Smith<\/a><\/span> of the Skyline Policy Risk Group,\u00a0 having multiple similar suppliers on tap in case one goes offline is a good start. The best solutions may lie at two extremes:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><i>Vertical integration<\/i><b>:<\/b> assume greater control of resources used in production, either by acquisition or gradual growth, reducing upstream supply partnerships.<\/li>\n<li><i>Alternative supply: <\/i>innovate products that are less dependent on specific construction, utility, or components to ensure against shortages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b>Form alliances for advocacy \u2013 <\/b>Bottlenecks, shortages, and waste linger when regulations artificially constrain buyers\u2019 options or suppliers\u2019 ability to produce and deliver. Uniting with others in our industry to advocate for change could win targeted relief for the whole supply chain.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><i>Example: <\/i>The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asicentral.com\/news\/newsletters\/promogram\/november-2021\/citing-progress-top-ports-delay-cargo-container-fines\/\">Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles<\/a><\/span> intake 40% of US imports. After advocacy from the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, Long Beach amended regulations, allowing empty shipping containers to be stacked six high instead of two high. This change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/city-of-long-beach-allows-logistics-companies-to-stack-containers-higher\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">freed up capacity<\/span><\/a> being wasted on storage to receive new loads from ports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b>Consider upstream relationships <\/b>\u2013 Effective communication and positive fulfillment experiences can improve the quality of direct supply chain relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><i>Example<\/i>: Ensuring our suppliers profit adequately from each service they provide us reduces the risk of their turning off those services when under strain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b>Re-evaluate alternative modalities \u2013 <\/b>In periods of constrained distribution, efficiency scales invert. A transportation mode\u2019s efficiency can plummet in a chain reaction from unexpected sources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><i>Example<\/i>: When trucking companies are paying more for labor and fuel, air transportation may become more economical than sea-based or highway-based transportation (especially when factoring in savings in speed and time).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b>Prioritize sourcing proximity \u2013 <\/b>In normal circumstances, obtaining supply at the lowest unit or transportation price is an obvious stewardship play. As the transportation breakdown from 2020 through 2022 has shown, low unit prices profit us nothing if the units cannot travel great distances on time\/budget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><b>Honor the <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>people<\/b><\/span><b> in your supply chain &#8211; <\/b>For Christian business leaders, our seventh strategy involves looking beyond the business dynamics to honor the companies and individuals whose labor fuels our success.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Using the seven smart strategies for supply chain management will help businesses mitigate risks and strengthen relationships. By positioning vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors according to the probability of fulfillment disruption (e.g., due to their location, economic vulnerability, debt load), we can visualize the degree to which their potential disruption would impact our businesses. We mitigate supply chain risk by exercising best practices in supplier selection, establishing redundancy, and innovating alternatives.
