Healthy businesses require a leader with a good pruning hand. We must constantly tend to the health of the business for it to grow and flourish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pruning in business means ending things. Endings are painful\u2014so painful, in fact, that we are inclined to avoid them altogether. But certain things must end for better things to come. It\u2019s an essential practice for our businesses to flourish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To overcome our inclination for avoidance, we need to normalize <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Necessary-Endings-Henry-Cloud-audiobook\/dp\/B004JLU0ZQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">necessary endings<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And as we grow comfortable with the pruning principle, we can learn when, and how, to apply it in our businesses. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>When Businesses Fail to Prune<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business leaders who tolerate unprofitable customers, unhealthy employees, or underperforming products run the risk of small problems growing bigger over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e-careers.com\/connected\/10-businesses-that-failed-to-adapt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kodak <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the market leader in photographic film in the 20th century. It developed the first digital camera as early as 1975 but dropped it for fear of it cannibalizing its existing film business. It filed for bankruptcy in 2012.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collectivecampus.io\/blog\/10-companies-that-were-too-slow-to-respond-to-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Motors<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of the largest companies in the world. Focusing on profits from finance, the business neglected to improve the quality of its product, failed to adapt to changes in customer needs, and didn\u2019t invest in new technologies. It survived but only after a massive bailout from the US government in 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many factors contributed to the decline of these businesses, it\u2019s clear that critical pruning moments were missed at various stages in the process. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Pruning Principle<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the gospel of John, Jesus shared the pruning principle as a foundation for growth:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, <\/em><em>and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+15%3A2&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 15:2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus\u2019s analogy, taken from the natural world, indicates that pruning is essential for future growth.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Leaning into this analogy, it is instructive to understand the three cases in which a gardener will choose to prune.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20901 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning-1024x308.png\" alt=\"pruning for business growth\" width=\"1024\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning-1024x308.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning-300x90.png 300w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning-768x231.png 768w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning.png 1188w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Necessary-Endings-Henry-Cloud-audiobook\/dp\/B004JLU0ZQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Henry Cloud<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cYou can\u2019t prune toward anything if you don\u2019t know what you want. You have to figure out what you are trying to build and then define what the pruning standards are going to be. That definition and those standards will bring you to the pruning moments, wherein you either own the vision or you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In business, there are three common areas where leaders can consider a necessary ending: pruning unprofitable customers or vendors, pruning unhealthy employees, or pruning underperforming products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pruning the Business: Unprofitable Customers or Vendors<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While customer retention remains imperative for any business, the pruning principle focuses us on retaining the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business may decide to divest itself of certain customers or vendors when the cost to retain the customer exceeds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/04\/the-right-way-to-manage-unprofitablecustomers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cost to lose the customer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 A series of hurricanes may cause an insurance company to divest itself from certain high-risk customers for fear of massive losses in the future. A restaurant may decide to block a diner due to rude treatment of the staff. An electrician may choose to end its relationship with a low-cost vendor that consistently misses delivery deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A necessary ending with a customer or vendor can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/04\/the-right-way-to-manage-unprofitable-customers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase profitability, improve employee morale, address capacity constraints, and bolster a business strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are five considerations we can use to assess the health of customer relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20902 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations-1024x502.png\" alt=\"customer considerations for growth\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations-1024x502.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations-768x376.png 768w, https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations.png 1190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these considerations raise concerns, it might be time to consider a necessary ending with a customer or a vendor. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Pruning the Business: Unhealthy Employees<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When considering the effect of an unhealthy employee on our business cultures, it\u2019s a leader\u2019s task to protect the company&#8217;s mission.\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Henry Cloud, we can protect ourselves and our companies from people who behave irresponsibly, or even spitefully, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wG0ysBIkG90&amp;list=PLpqejP-vQ4rbVAK9oW4YoAu5zAUi6yapW&amp;index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the following analysis<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wise: <\/strong>When challenged with a problem or a shortcoming,<\/span> a wise person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will address an issue as a learning opportunity. This is the posture of a healthy employee. As leaders, our strategy is to coach them, give feedback, and resource them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foolish: <\/b>A foolish person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, makes excuses and tries to reframe the issue when they are confronted with a problem or a shortcoming. This is the poster of a less-than-healthy employee. As leaders, we need to set limits and provide clear consequences in a firm but loving way. If the foolish person does not make changes over time, a necessary ending might be necessary to protect the company culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Evil: <\/strong>Some people might lash out when confronted with a problem or shortcoming, seeking to inflict pain. Ongoing patterns of pain infliction might indicate you are dealing with an<\/span> evil person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As leaders, our strategy is to minimize negative fallout and potentially employ legal advice as necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are difficult and often nuanced situations that require careful implementation. However, we should count the cost of not changing. The true cost to our organization, team, culture, ministry, and leadership integrity may shock us.<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C12 member <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fen5b2zovLY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brad Carr, CEO and president of SonicAire<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performed a cultural engagement survey and was surprised to learn that his company scored as a \u201ctoxic culture.\u201d After some investigation, he had to apply the pruning principle with one of his employees and now his company enjoys a much healthier culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pruning the Business: Underperforming Products<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a business, different products and business lines often compete for a company\u2019s resources. In the case of underperforming products, the pruning principle requires an assessment, not only of the product&#8217;s performance today but also a comparative analysis of the product line\u2019s potential in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2015\/06\/deciding-to-fix-or-kill-a-problem-product\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deciding to Fix or Kill a Problem Product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Moe Kelly states, \u201cThe ability to kill a project that cannot succeed is one of the most valuable skills a product development team can have. Healthy businesses require a leader with a good pruning hand. We must constantly tend to the health of the business for it to grow and flourish.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pruning in business means ending things. Endings are painful\u2014so painful, in fact, that we are inclined to avoid them altogether. But certain things must end for better things to come. It\u2019s an essential practice for our businesses to flourish.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To overcome our inclination for avoidance, we need to normalize <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Necessary-Endings-Henry-Cloud-audiobook\/dp\/B004JLU0ZQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">necessary endings<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And as we grow comfortable with the pruning principle, we can learn when, and how, to apply it in our businesses. <\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>When Businesses Fail to Prune<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business leaders who tolerate unprofitable customers, unhealthy employees, or underperforming products run the risk of small problems growing bigger over time.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e-careers.com\/connected\/10-businesses-that-failed-to-adapt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kodak <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the market leader in photographic film in the 20th century. It developed the first digital camera as early as 1975 but dropped it for fear of it cannibalizing its existing film business. It filed for bankruptcy in 2012.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.collectivecampus.io\/blog\/10-companies-that-were-too-slow-to-respond-to-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Motors<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was one of the largest companies in the world. Focusing on profits from finance, the business neglected to improve the quality of its product, failed to adapt to changes in customer needs, and didn\u2019t invest in new technologies. It survived but only after a massive bailout from the US government in 2009.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many factors contributed to the decline of these businesses, it\u2019s clear that critical pruning moments were missed at various stages in the process. <\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>The Pruning Principle<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the gospel of John, Jesus shared the pruning principle as a foundation for growth:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/a>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, <\/em><em>and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+15%3A2&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 15:2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus\u2019s analogy, taken from the natural world, indicates that pruning is essential for future growth.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Leaning into this analogy, it is instructive to understand the three cases in which a gardener will choose to prune.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20901 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/three-categories-of-pruning-1024x308.png\" alt=\"pruning for business growth\" width=\"1024\" height=\"308\" \/>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Necessary-Endings-Henry-Cloud-audiobook\/dp\/B004JLU0ZQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Henry Cloud<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201cYou can\u2019t prune toward anything if you don\u2019t know what you want. You have to figure out what you are trying to build and then define what the pruning standards are going to be. That definition and those standards will bring you to the pruning moments, wherein you either own the vision or you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In business, there are three common areas where leaders can consider a necessary ending: pruning unprofitable customers or vendors, pruning unhealthy employees, or pruning underperforming products.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Pruning the Business: Unprofitable Customers or Vendors<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While customer retention remains imperative for any business, the pruning principle focuses us on retaining the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> customers.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business may decide to divest itself of certain customers or vendors when the cost to retain the customer exceeds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/04\/the-right-way-to-manage-unprofitablecustomers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cost to lose the customer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 A series of hurricanes may cause an insurance company to divest itself from certain high-risk customers for fear of massive losses in the future. A restaurant may decide to block a diner due to rude treatment of the staff. An electrician may choose to end its relationship with a low-cost vendor that consistently misses delivery deadlines.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A necessary ending with a customer or vendor can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2008\/04\/the-right-way-to-manage-unprofitable-customers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase profitability, improve employee morale, address capacity constraints, and bolster a business strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are five considerations we can use to assess the health of customer relationships.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20902 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.joinc12.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/five-customer-considerations-1024x502.png\" alt=\"customer considerations for growth\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" \/>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these considerations raise concerns, it might be time to consider a necessary ending with a customer or a vendor. <\/span>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Pruning the Business: Unhealthy Employees<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When considering the effect of an unhealthy employee on our business cultures, it\u2019s a leader\u2019s task to protect the company's mission.\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Henry Cloud, we can protect ourselves and our companies from people who behave irresponsibly, or even spitefully, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wG0ysBIkG90&amp;list=PLpqejP-vQ4rbVAK9oW4YoAu5zAUi6yapW&amp;index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the following analysis<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wise: <\/strong>When challenged with a problem or a shortcoming,<\/span> a wise person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will address an issue as a learning opportunity. This is the posture of a healthy employee. As leaders, our strategy is to coach them, give feedback, and resource them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foolish: <\/b>A foolish person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, makes excuses and tries to reframe the issue when they are confronted with a problem or a shortcoming. This is the poster of a less-than-healthy employee. As leaders, we need to set limits and provide clear consequences in a firm but loving way. If the foolish person does not make changes over time, a necessary ending might be necessary to protect the company culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Evil: <\/strong>Some people might lash out when confronted with a problem or shortcoming, seeking to inflict pain. Ongoing patterns of pain infliction might indicate you are dealing with an<\/span> evil person<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As leaders, our strategy is to minimize negative fallout and potentially employ legal advice as necessary.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are difficult and often nuanced situations that require careful implementation. However, we should count the cost of not changing.
